Independent Living Products for Special Needs: Warning Devices for the Hearing Impaired

There is a wide variety of independent living products for the hearing impaired available through All Hands Interpreting Service.  Because many products and services are not geared towards the deaf community and cannot be used by the hearing impaired, products for special needs must be devised. 

Products for special needs include the category of warning devices for the hearing impaired.  Most warning devices use sound to alert people of danger; therefore independent living products must be available for the hearing impaired.  The most popular warning devices for the hearing impaired include the Lifesaver Carbon Monoxide Detector with Strobe Light, the First Alert Smoke & Fire Detector, the Gentex 710LS/710CS, and the Gentex 7109LS/7109CS.

  • The Lifesaver Carbon Monoxide Detector with Strobe Light includes a red alarm light, a monitoring of carbon monoxide every two and a half minutes, a loud alarm, the ability to connect to multiple detectors, a 120V AC3 wire interconnect, a bright 177 candela light, and a flash rate of 60 flashes per minute.  This product for special needs has been approved and recommended for use. 
  • The First Alert Smoke & Fire Detector is extremely sensitive at detecting flames and can connect to 12 different detectors.  Also using a bright 177 candela strobe light with a flashing speed of 60 flashes per minute, this independent living product has met all necessary requirements.  A 10 year warranty is issued with purchase.
  • The Gentex 710LS/710CS is a photoelectric smoke detector that presents both audible and visual warnings when smoke is present.  Other features include a quick disconnect wiring harness, included mounting hardware, a one year warranty, and the ability to connect to up to six detectors. 
The Gentex 7109LS/7109CS is primarily the same independent living product as the Gentex 710LS/710CS.  The difference is that this model also includes a back up battery pack that operates only audibly.
